THURSDAY PUZZLE — Administrivial Alert: I've just been told that updates will be made to the nytimes.com moderating system between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 1 a.m. Thursday. Please gird your loins as needed.During that time, "we will not be able to moderate comments and readers will not be able read comments on the article page. However, they will be able to submit them." Thank you for your patience and understanding if your comments do not appear right away. I will check them first thing in the morning and put through any that have not published.
Are you a pun lover or a pun hater? This puzzle by Sam Trabucco is fairly easy for a Thursday, but it holds its punch line for the end, giving it more impact.
14A: I had to think about this one, but in retrospect, it’s pretty clever. “Hide-y holes?” is a play on “hidey holes,” small holes in which resources can be stashed in certain video games. It seems to have originated either in the RuneScape or Minecraft games. In this clue, however, the word “hide” is separated by that hyphen, and it refers to skin. The answer is PORES.
17A: IMs (instant messages) originated, I believe, with AOL, but I see people refer to DMs (direct messages) more now.
1D: “Spanish fleet?” sounds on the surface like it’s hinting at something nautical, but it’s not: Note the question mark. This clue is looking for the Spanish word for “fleet,” and not the kind of “fleet” that refers to ships. The answer is RAPIDO, because “fleet” can also mean “fast.”
5D: O.K., I LOLed: “Ones going down in flames?” are WICKS.
Here we are asked to remember the names of actors who portrayed film characters with single letters (“characters”) for names. Right away I was at a disadvantage, because remembering names is a personal weakness. This is where kind crossings can really be a blessing. With a few crossing letters, my memory was jogged, and I was able to fill in the entire entry.
For example, at 15A, the answer to the clue “Player of X in ‘X-Men’” was PATRICK STEWART. I have not seen the “X-Men” films, but even I knew that. My problem was remembering the actor’s name, and for shame, Deb. Who doesn’t remember Sir PATRICK STEWART, he of “Star Trek” fame? He of Shakespeare and “A Christmas Carol” and “I, Claudius” fame? Again, it’s not that I didn’t know who he was. I just couldn’t remember his name, because that’s how my brain works (or doesn’t work). So I solved a few of the crossing Down entries and voilà! One theme entry filled in.
All four theme entry actors make their New York Times Crossword debut, and the theme is wrapped up neatly by the revealer at 54A, “15-, 26-, 33- or 39-Across, punnily?” for CHARACTER ACTOR.
Kudos to Mr. Trabucco for debuting a whopping 13 entries in this puzzle.
Oof, this was a doozy to construct. There are so few theme entry options (beyond the flexibility that Bond and “Men in Black” provide), leading to me needing to use 14-letter CHARACTER ACTOR instead of much friendlier CHARACTER ACTORS. Combined with my desire to use HUGO WEAVING (for whom I had no matching 11), that meant I could not use a 14x16 grid, which forced the rectangles in the corners. It did give me the chance to make the grid pretty open, and I like how it’s different from what’s typically seen (even if that is because it’s ugly and what’s typically seen is not ugly).
I’m thrilled to debut THE BEAN today. I’ve been to Chicago only once, but while there I developed a weird fascination with THE BEAN. It’s become quite a real part of my personality — many of my friends won’t visit Chicago without sending me a selfie with THE BEAN. I’ll always look back on this puzzle as my tribute to it.
Almost finished solving but need a bit more help? We’ve got you covered.
Warning: There be spoilers ahead, but subscribers can take a peek at the answer key.
